Ethiopia, the country of culture, religions, tribes and nature.
Ethiopia is the ideal place to enjoy culture, religion, tribes, and nature.
1. Culture is fascinating in cities like Gondar, with its 17th-century castles and buildings that transport us to medieval European cities with their castles and fortresses.
2. Religion is present in many places. Christianity is present in the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, which may remind us of the temples of Petra (Jordan), or in Bahir Dar with its more than 20 monasteries, most of them dating back to the 17th century, on Lake Tana. Islam is present in Harar, the fourth holiest city of Islam, with its 10th-century mosques and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Jewish culture is present in the territory of the Ethiopian Jewish community Beta Israel, which was the independent Jewish kingdom of Simeon for 13 centuries, from the 4th century to 1627, surrounding the aforementioned Lake Tana.
3. The many tribes settled in the Omo Valley, the cradle of humanity, who have preserved their identity and traditions for centuries. These include the Daasanach, Nyangatom, Mursi, Bodi, Kwegu, Karo, Mekan, Aari, Arbore, Banna, Bashada, Basketo, Dime, Hamar, Kwegu, Mursi, Meen, Surma, Tsamako, Tsemai, and Turkana. Some of their most interesting traditions include the lip plates of the Mursi and Surma, Donga Stick wrestling, the Bodi fattening ceremony called Kel, in which men are fed blood and milik for several months and the fattest man of the year is chosen, the bull-leaping initiation rite of Hamer youth, body painting, and more.
4. The Bale Mountains, Simien Mountains, Awash, Borana, and Chebera Churchura National Parks, where you can see, among others, endemic Ethiopian species such as the Ethiopian wolf, the gelada baboon, the mountain nyala, the Walia ibex, and various bird species such as the thick-billed crow.
